October Blog - How Dogs Experience Scent Differently to Humans
Dogs experience scent far more intensely than humans. While we enjoy lighting a candle or spraying a room to make it smell fresh, our dogs are taking in those smells in a very different way. What feels gentle to us can be loud and confusing to them.
Many dog owners assume that if something smells nice and is sold widely, it must be fine to use around pets. It’s an easy mistake to make. After all, scent is part of creating a cosy home. But dogs live in a world led by smell, and their noses work on a level we can barely imagine.
A dog’s sense of smell is estimated to be tens of thousands of times stronger than ours. They have far more scent receptors and a larger part of their brain dedicated to processing smells. This means they don’t just notice scent — they experience it deeply. Strong or artificial smells can linger for them long after we’ve stopped noticing them.
Understanding this sensitivity helps us make kinder choices at home. When we reduce harsh or overpowering scents, we help dogs feel calmer and more settled in their space.
Here are three things dog owners should consider when using scented products at home:
1. Strength matters What smells subtle to a human can feel intense to a dog. Strong fragrances, especially those made with synthetic chemicals, can overwhelm their senses and cause discomfort.
2. Air quality affects behaviour Dogs can react to heavy scents by leaving the room, becoming restless, or showing signs of stress. A calm dog-friendly home often smells lighter and cleaner rather than heavily fragranced.
3. Ingredients make a difference Not all scented products are created with pets in mind. Some ingredients can irritate a dog’s airways or skin. Choosing products made with care and research helps protect their wellbeing.
Being mindful of scent isn’t about removing comfort from your home. It’s about making choices that work for everyone living in it, paws included.
